Dodd wanted to honor her own father, who had raised her and her siblings after her mother died.

After listening to a sermon about Mother's Day, Dodd was inspired to create a holiday to recognize her father. She held the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially declared Father's Day a national holiday in the US.

Today, Father's Day is celebrated around the world on different days throughout the year depending on local customs and traditions. For many people though, it remains linked to our modern concept of fatherhood and is celebrated in acknowledgement of the special bond between father and child.
