Alarms are designed to be heard. If you're a heavy sleeper, or you keep your phone away from your bed at night, you want your iPhone alarm to be loud and easy to hear.

If you keep sleeping through your alarm, you may be wondering, "Why is my iPhone alarm so quiet?".

There are several reasons why your alarm may be too quiet. It could be because of the volume you've set, the ringtone you have, or because of the version of iPhone you've got.

In this article, we'll help answer the question, "Why is my iPhone alarm so quiet?" to help you fix the problem and troubleshoot any other issues you may have with your iPhone's alarm volume.

Why Is My iPhone Alarm So Quiet?

Here are the main reasons why your iPhone alarm is so quiet:

  • The volume is turned down very low
  • You don't have a ringtone on your alarm
  • The ringtone you use for your alarm is very quiet and inaudible
  • You have an iPhone X and your phone is unlocked (this reduces the volume of the alarm)

How to Make iPhone Alarm Louder

If you keep sleeping through your alarm and want to make it louder, here's how to increase the alarm volume on an iPhone.

You need to follow all the steps below to make your iPhone alarm louder:

  • Turn up the volume on your iPhone by pressing the top volume button until you've reached your desired level. Make sure you do this when your iPhone is on the home or lock screen, not on an app.
  • Change the ringtone of your alarm, so it has a ringtone or a louder ringtone. If your alarm is set to "None" under the "Sound" heading, the alarm will simply vibrate instead of making a sound. If your ringtone is too quiet, choose a louder sound.
  • Keep your iPhone locked if you have an iPhone X. When they are unlocked and the alarm goes off, it will be quieter than the volume you've set.

Does iPhone Alarm Use Ringer or Volume?

It's not widely known, but there are two different sound controls on an iPhone.

One controls the volume of your ringtone and other notifications, like text messages. The other controls the volume of sounds in your apps, like on TikTok or YouTube videos.

The iPhone alarm uses ringer to control its volume, not volume/sound.

Here's a summary of what each one controls.

  • Ringer: Controls the volume of your ringtone, alerts, and alarm
  • Volume/Sound: Controls the volume of your apps, like videos

However, if your ringer is on silent, this will not change the volume of your alarm.

Here are three different ways how to change your ringer volume:

  1. When your iPhone is locked, use the left side volume buttons
  2. When your iPhone is unlocked, and you're on the home screen, use the left side volume buttons
  3. Visit "Settings", then tap "Sounds & Haptics", then change the volume under "Ringer & Alerts" by sliding the volume level up or down. You can also decide whether you want to be able to change the volume of your ringtone, alarm, and alerts via the side buttons by keeping the "Change with Buttons" toggle on or off.

Here's how to change your sound volume in apps:

  1. Visit an app
  2. Use the side buttons to control the sound up or down

Changing the sound in this way will not change the volume of your ringtone, alarm, or notifications.
