Why You Should Buy an Alarm Clock

Learn the benefits of owning an alarm clock and why it's a must-have for any bedroom.

Updated: September 2, 2022

Smartphones revolutionized the way we wake up in the morning. Historically, everyone used an alarm clock. Wind-up clocks (the first kind of alarm) were especially popular across the globe. Their shrill ringing could wake up any deep sleeper!

But the rise of smartphones led to the downfall of alarm clocks. People quickly discovered that phone alarms were more accessible, easier to use, and came with lots of fancy ringtones that made waking up more personal.

However, in today's world of being so connected, using a traditional alarm clock has its benefits. After years of waking up with phones in hand, people are discovering that using their phones so early in the morning isn't as good as it seemed.

Keep reading to learn more about why people still use alarm clocks and why they are better than phones!

Does Anyone Still Use Alarm Clocks?

Yes, many people around the world still use alarm clocks. Traditional alarm clocks, like radio alarms and wind-up clocks, are still in fashion.

They may not be as popular as smartphone alarms, but, according to a YouGovAmerica survey, around 15% of the population surveyed still use a radio alarm clock. It's a low number, presumably because smartphones are more easily accessible, but it's still a huge number of people in the US alone.

Wondering why these people still use alarm clocks instead of smartphones? There are lots of proven reasons why alarm clocks are better than phones, which we'll explain as you read on.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Alarm Clocks

Alarm clocks have their benefits, but, just like everything else in the world, they have their downsides, too. Keep reading to discover the advantages and disadvantages of alarm clocks.

Advantages of Alarm Clocks

Helps break bad habits

If you're always snoozing, alarm clocks can help you kick the habit for good. Some alarms get you out of bed by forcing you to complete certain tasks before they stop sounding.

Ditches social media temptation

Scrolling early in the morning or checking emails isn't always the best way to start the day. Even David Karp, founder of Tumblr swears that reading emails first thing in the morning never feels productive! When you use an alarm clock, you don't need to use your smartphone, ditching that temptation to scroll the morning away.

Better for deep sleepers

Despite their various settings, smartphone alarms are simple. It's why they can't wake everyone up. Some traditional alarm clocks are specialized for waking you up in the morning. For example, some alarms have powerful bed shakers or vibrating wrist alarms that can wake up any deep sleeper.

Disadvantages of Alarm Clocks

Dealing with dials and buttons

Most alarm clocks are simple to navigate, but you still need to press a few more buttons than you would on a smartphone. Some people don't like the idea of manually setting an alarm (rather than asking Alexa or Siri), but the truth is they are much easier than they sound. Even wind-up alarm clocks are simple when you know how to use them.

Fewer settings

Alarm clocks are generally simpler than smartphone alarms. Most come with basic settings, like an alarm clock and a snooze button. Depending on the clock you buy, it may not come with anything else, like volume controls, multiple alarms, alternate day alarms, etc. However, these types of alarms are in the minority, as most are well suited to modern life.

Why Is an Alarm Clock Better Than a Phone?

Many people believe alarm clocks are better than phone alarms. Even though we are becoming more attached to our phones, we're also realizing the downsides of being so connected.

When you check your phone in the morning, it's easy to feel bogged down by the news, things you've read on social media, and emails from your boss.

But using an alarm clock eliminates those distractions, helping you wake up faster, in a better mood, and more in the present moment.
